Dick Cheney’s Daughters Argue Over Same-Sex Marriage

The two daughters of Dick Cheney are currently having a social media quarrel. This is a highly charged issue, and is especially volatile because of the sexual preference of one of the daughters. Mary Cheney is married to a woman, while the other daughter, Liz Cheney is very opposed to same-sex marriage. A Facebook post from Mary Cheney read thus, “Liz – this isn’t just an issue on which we disagree – you’re just wrong – and on the wrong side of history,” Liz Cheney is trying to make her position known as she attempts to win a United States Senate chair next year in Wyoming for the Republicans. She said that she supports some of the rights that same-sex couples can have, but does not support same-sex marriages, even though her sister is legally in a same-sex marriage.

This is just an issue in which we disagree.” Mary Cheney has been with her same-sex partner for quite a while, named Heather Poe. Last year, she married Poe, after Washington made same-sex marriages legal in 2009. They have to children together, Samuel and Sarah, a son and a daughter. On the Facebook argument, Poe said she was offended by Liz Cheney’s comments. I was watching my sister-in-law on Fox News Sunday (yes Liz, in fifteen states and the District of Columbia you are my sister-in-law) and was very disappointed to hear her say “I do believe in the traditional definition of marriage.”

She went on to say that Liz Cheney had been in their home and had spent time with the family and that she was very disappointed and offended by her comments. She added, “I always thought freedom meant freedom for EVERYONE.” Mary Cheney’s sexual preference was known when her father ran for vice-president in 2000, but the family did not discuss it. Cheney himself has mentioned in the past that he believes in the right to marry for gays and lesbians, but he has passed off the buck to the state government. “My position on that issue is well known, I enunciated it in 2000 in a debate with Joe Lieberman. It hasn’t changed. And I’ll let my daughters speak for themselves,” Cheney said in a CNN interview.
